Last Night of the Social Justice Series

the world I never knew…

week 4: my world>>my world

WEEK 1: MY WORLD >> MY STORY | week 2: my space >> my world | week 3: my community>> my world

god’s picture for the world…

Isaiah 65:20-25

20 “No longer will babies die when only a few days old.

No longer will adults die before they have lived a full life.

No longer will people be considered old at one hundred!

Only the cursed will die that young!

21 In those days people will live in the houses they build

and eat the fruit of their own vineyards.

22 Unlike the past, invaders will not take their houses and confiscate their

vineyards. For my people will live as long as trees,

and my chosen ones will have time to enjoy their hard-won gains.

23 They will not work in vain,

and their children will not be doomed to misfortune.

For they are people blessed by the Lord,

and their children, too, will be blessed.

24 I will answer them before they even call to me.

While they are still talking about their needs,

I will go ahead and answer their prayers!

25 The wolf and the lamb will feed together.

The lion will eat hay like a cow.

But the snakes will eat dust.

In those days no one will be hurt or destroyed on my holy mountain.

I, the Lord, have spoken!”

living like royalty…

Exodus 19:6

And you will be my kingdom of priests, my holy nation.’ This is the message you must give to the people of Israel.”

god’s people…part of the problem

Mark 7:20-23

20 And then he added, “It is what comes from inside that defiles you. 21 For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. 23 All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you.”

Ezekiel 34:8

As surely as I live, says the Sovereign Lord, you abandoned my flock and left them to be attacked by every wild animal. And though you were my shepherds, you didn’t search for my sheep when they were lost. You took care of yourselves and left the sheep to starve.

WHEN I LOOK AT THE WORLD… WHAT DO I SEE?

god’s people… part of the solution

Matthew 5:13-16

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.

14 “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

Micah 6:8

…the Lord has told you what is good,

and this is what he requires of you:

to do what is right, to love mercy,

and to walk humbly with your God.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR ME TO BE PART OF THE SOLUTION?

royalty reloaded…

1 Peter 2:9

But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.

HOW WILL I SHARE THE WEAKNESS OF THE WEAK…

…IN MY LIFE?

…IN MY SCHOOL?

…IN MY COMMUNITY?

…IN MY WORLD?

Sunday 5-18 Lesson

the world I never knew…

week 3: my community>>my world

I think I might be blind…

conveniently blind…

Isaiah 42:18-20

18 “Listen, you who are deaf! Look and see, you blind!

19 Who is as blind as my own people, my servant? Who is as deaf as my messenger? Who is as blind as my chosen people, the servant of the Lord?

20 You see and recognize what is right but refuse to act on it. You hear with your ears, but you don’t really listen.”

the neighbors I never see…

John 4

1 Jesus* knew the Pharisees had heard that he was baptizing and making more disciples than John 2 (though Jesus himself didn’t baptize them—his disciples did). 3 So he left Judea and returned to Galilee.

4 He had to go through Samaria on the way. 5 Eventually he came to the Samaritan village of Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there; and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime. 7 Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Please give me a drink.” 8 He was alone at the time because his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food.

9 The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans.* She said to Jesus, “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?”

AN UNLIKELY COMPANION

a promise for a thirsty soul…

a much larger community…

16 “Go and get your husband,” Jesus told her.

17 “I don’t have a husband,” the woman replied.

Jesus said, “You’re right! You don’t have a husband—18 for you have had five husbands, and you aren’t even married to the man you’re living with now. You certainly spoke the truth!”

10 Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.”

11 “But sir, you don’t have a rope or a bucket,” she said, “and this well is very deep. Where would you get this living water? 12 And besides, do you think you’re greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us this well? How can you offer better water than he and his sons and his animals enjoyed?”

13 Jesus replied, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. 14 But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”

15 “Please, sir,” the woman said, “give me this water! Then I’ll never be thirsty again, and I won’t have to come here to get water.”

25 The woman said, “I know the Messiah is coming—the one who is called Christ. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”

26 Then Jesus told her, “I Am the Messiah!”*

27 Just then his disciples came back. They were shocked to find him talking to a woman, but none of them had the nerve to ask, “What do you want with her?” or “Why are you talking to her?”

28 The woman left her water jar beside the well and ran back to the village, telling everyone, 29 “Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could he possibly be the Messiah?” 30 So the people came streaming from the village to see him.

40 When they came out to see him, they begged him to stay in their village. So he stayed for two days, 41 long enough for many more to hear his message and believe. 42 Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not just because of what you told

us, but because we have heard him ourselves. Now we know that he is indeed the Savior of the world.”

WHAT WOULD IT BE LIKE FOR ME TO “STAY FOR TWO DAYS” IN A LAND OF OUTSIDERS?

do you need eye surgery…

John 9:39-41

39 Then Jesus told him,* “I entered this world to render judgment—to give sight to the blind and to show those who think they see* that they are blind.”

40 Some Pharisees who were standing nearby heard him and asked, “Are you saying we’re blind?”

41 “If you were blind, you wouldn’t be guilty,” Jesus replied. “But you remain guilty because you claim you can see.

WHERE AM I CHOOSING TO BE BLIND?

WHAT WOULD MY COMMUNITY LOOK LIKE IF I CHOSE TO OPEN MY EYES A LITTLE WIDER?

My Space, My World - Social Justice wk2

the world I never knew…
Week 2 My Space- My World

WHAT SEPARATES INSIDERS FROM OUTSIDERS?

TOUCHING THE UNTOUCHABLE…

Mark 1:40-45
40 A man with leprosy came and knelt in front of Jesus, begging to be healed. “If you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean,” he said.

WHAT MAKES SOMEONE AN OUTSIDER?

Leviticus 13:45-46
45 “Those who suffer from a serious skin disease must tear their clothing and leave their hair uncombed.*

WHAT EFFECT DID OUTSIDERS HAVE ON JESUS?

WHAT EFFECT DID JESUS HAVE ON THE OUTSIDERS?

OUTSIDERS IN MY WORLD…IN MY SPACE
Luke 19:1-10
1 Jesus entered Jericho and made his way through the town. 2 There was a man there named Zacchaeus. He was the chief tax collector in the region, and he had become very rich. 3 He tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was going to pass that way. 5 When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. “Zacchaeus!” he said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.” 6 Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy. 7 But the people were displeased. “He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner,” they grumbled. 8 Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, “I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!” 9 Jesus responded, “Salvation has come to this home today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man* came to seek and save those who are lost.”

INJUSTICE IN MY SPACE…

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO LIVE AMONG OUTSIDERS?

HOW MIGHT MY LIFE BE DIFFERENT LIVING IN THE AREAS WHERE INSIDE/OUTSIDE CLASH?

Sunday Nights Youth Group

Last Night in youth group we began a series on Social Justice. We are looking at how we as Christians are to address the oppressed and marginalized in our world. Following our the notes...

the world I never knew

week 1: my world>>my story

the world and its pain…

Habbakuk 1:2-4

2 How long, O Lord, must I call for help? But you do not listen! “Violence is

everywhere!” I cry, but you do not come to save.

3 Must I forever see these evil deeds? Why must I watch all this misery?

Wherever I look, I see destruction and violence. I am surrounded by people who

love to argue and fight.

4 The law has become paralyzed, and there is no justice in the courts. The

wicked far outnumber the righteous, so that justice has become perverted.

where is God in the world?

How would you respond to this Question?

hope for the world…

Luke 4:16-20

16 When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures. 17 The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written:

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,

for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released,

that the blind will see,

that the oppressed will be set free,

19 and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.*”

20 He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently. 21 Then he began to speak to them. “The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!”

…a picture of Jesus at work in the world

Jesus summarized this message by reducing The Commandments to two:

Love God and Love your neighbor”. His life was an example of compassion for the blind, the lame, the sick and the destitute – those who were either outcasts or who disturbed peoples’ comfort zones.

Acts 1:8

8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Isaiah 1:17

Learn to do good. Seek justice. Help the oppressed. Defend the cause of orphans. Fight for the rights of widows.

…a picture of Jesus’ followers at work in the world

my world, my story…

1 Corinthians 9:19-23

19 Even though I am a free man with no master, I have become a slave to all people to bring many to Christ. 20 When I was with the Jews, I lived like a Jew to bring the Jews to Christ. When I was with those who follow the Jewish law, I too lived under that law. Even though I am not subject to the law, I did this so I could bring to Christ those who are under the law. 21 When I am with the Gentiles who do not follow the Jewish law,* I too live apart from that law so I can bring them to Christ. But I do not ignore the law of God; I obey the law of Christ.

22 WHEN I AM WITH THOSE WHO ARE WEAK, I SHARE THEIR WEAKNESS, for I want to bring the weak to Christ. Yes, I try to find common ground with everyone, doing everything I can to save some. 23 I do everything to spread the Good News and share in its blessings.

what injustice have i experienced?

what injustice have i caused?

what injustice have i ignored?
